ARE birds NESTING INSIDE YOUR BUILDING?
Birds can end up in any location, at any time of year. However, they are at their busiest in springtime, building nests to raise young. Birds prefer to be out of the weather, and often look to get underneath overhangs, in and around the soffits, and gutters that have gutter guard material. They also can end up in attic spaces by entering through soffits, gable vents, ridge vents, chimneys, exhaust and dryer vents, and faulty flashing around the roof-line.
Birds don’t typically abandon their nests due to human scent, as many people think. Birds have a nasty habit of leaving piles of droppings and stains below areas they roost, and preventing them from using those areas is the most effective way to eliminate that.
Health concerns and Remediation
Bird nests often contain bird mites, which infest nests and can make their way into homes. If those bird mites spread and get in contact with you, they can bite and leave tiny little red marks on your body and be very uncomfortable.
Birds nesting in exhaust vents from bathrooms and dryers often allow bird mites to get into the area inside and should always be removed and cleaned out. Sanitizing the area and performing ecto parasite treatments are important parts of bird remediation.
